UPDATE: This is one super sweet boy. He is submissive with people, but can also be stubborn. He needs a firm but gentle person. He is completely focused, to the point of obsession, on retrieving just about anything you'll throw. He loves to jump up and catch it also, so keep items on the soft side. That same obsession and focus is what gets him in trouble with cats. And if allowed, he would also go after deer, groundhogs and rabbits without a thought to his own safety. He is absolutely fearless and curious about everything. He should have a secure fenced yard so he can play freely with his people. I think he would do o.k. with kids as long as they are level headed and well behaved. A lot of yelling and screaming would not be good because of his natural submissiveness and sensitivity. He gets very nervous and upset when he thinks you're mad at him. He is excruciatingly sensitive to his person's feelings. I think he would be absolutely awesome with someone interested in doing search and rescue, but I wouldn't want to see him go to a strictly "working" home. He needs to be somebody's buddy. He loves to be with his person. He wants to adore and be adored. He will follow you everywhere. He is extremely intelligent and needs someone who is at least as smart as he is. He knows sit, down, comes when called, and walks nicely on a leash unless he's picked up a scent, in which case he goes into complete tracking mode until he finds whatever it is he's been smelling. At those times he barely hears or sees anything else. He can "find" his current retrieving toy and will gladly bring it to you. He also knows and responds to "leave it" for just about anything you don't want him getting into, including live animals, but will keep trying just in case the rules have changed and you didn't tell him. He crates beautifully and has no destructive behaviors. He is housetrained. He is genuinely a loyal friend and companion.
